TIPS - How To Avoid Free Grant Scams 1. If it sounds to good to be true... it probably is. When applying for government grants or assistance, always ask of anyone that gives you help "why are you doing this? What do you get out of it?" If they can give you a good answer, then they are likely legit. On the other hand, if your question leaves them hemming and hawing... walk away.
2. Do NOT give you bank information to a stranger. Free Grant scammers will often call people and pose as official employees needing their bank information so they can deposit the grant money. This is not the process that legitimate grant awards follow, so zip your lip and hang up!
3. Don't give money to anyone who says they can guarantee you a free grant so long as you pay them an upfront fee. No one can guarantee you an awarded grant. They best anyone can do is give you helpful information and guidance as you go through the grant application process, or, in some cases, write the grant application for you. The key issue is that they cannot guarantee you a grant... they can only help you improve your chances.
4. Do your homework. If someone phones you claiming to be from such and such a government agency, check to make sure there actually is such an agency. Also, don't be fooled by legitimate looking phone numbers, such as phone numbers that appear to be based in Washington D.C. Sophisticated scammers can manipulate the phone system to make it appear that they are phoning from a different location.
